The Procession of King George IV Entering Princes Street, Edinburgh, August, 1822

My friend, Charles Burnett, quondam Ross Herald, drew my attention to this picture by William Turner (known as "Turner of Oxford" to distinguish him from his more famous contemporary). It shows George IV's procession outside Register House in Princes Street. The tenements on the right were replaced at the end of the century by the North British, now the Balmoral Hotel.

There is an officer of arms at each side of the foreground, each standing beside a Freemason. The elaborate uniforms had been devised the year before for George IV's coronation.
