Messengers-at-Arms

Lyon was the first speaker at the Society of Messengers-at-Arms and Sheriff Officers' CPD session, held at Airth Castle Hotel on Saturday, 2nd December. He gave a very entertaining and informative talk on Corporate Heraldry. Lyon, who is the Honorary President of the Society, then attended the Society's AGM. The photograph shows him on President Alex. Irvine's right.

The sword, which serves as the Society's ceremonial mace, was presented by Sir Francis J. Grant, Lyon, in 1936. It had been kept for several decades in a cupboard at Lyon Office, having been placed there after the dissolution of the ancient Society of Messengers-at-Arms, which had been founded prior to the year 1631. Messengers-at-Arms form the junior and much the most numerous rank of the officers of arms in Scotland.
